Istanbul Airport has hosted the Golden Week, a shopping and holiday event in the Far East, especially in China. The event was celebrated as a beautiful shopping and cultural festival in the Unfree Duty-Free areas. The event, which aims to make shopping for Far Eastern tourists who happen to pass from Istanbul Airport, took place between 27 September and 10 October.
The event has achieved its goal by the attendance of the Chinese tourists. During the event, Chinese tourists' spending increased from 8 percent to 11 percent. Ali Şenher, CEO of Unifree, said these during his statement: “During normal days, we would serve around 600 Chinese customers in duty-free areas, this number reached to 1,060 daily customers during the Golden Week. We achieved the highest turnover since the opening of Istanbul Airport by the contribution of Golden Week. In addition to Chinese and Far Eastern passengers, the number of customers who shop at Unifree Duty-Free stores in a week has exceeded 110,000 thanks to the momentum created by our interesting event.”
Ali Şenher, CEO of Unifree, drew attention to the increase in the number of Chinese tourists coming to our country in recent years and said: “The number of 150,000 tourists who came to our country from the People’s Republic of China in 2008 increased to 400,000 as of 2018.
Since China's declaration of 2018 as ‘Turkey Tourism Year,’ many of the tour operators started to include Turkey in their package tour programs. We can say that around 600 thousand Chinese tourists will visit our country in 2019 and that they will enter the country via Istanbul.” With these words, he stated that the Golden Week event is very important for our country.
